Our newsletter is emailed to members before each meeting to notify members of the scheduled speakers, upcoming orchid shows and other society activities.
Meeting Program for 2022
Meetings are held in the basement hall of St. Joseph's Church at the corner of Courtland and Madison in Kitchener on the fourth Monday (unless pre-empted, see the program dates below).
Meetings begin promptly at 7:00pm; arrive from 6:30pm for social time and sales. Free parking is at the rear of the school; the entrances are off Madison or Cedar. Guests are welcome.
Meeting dates are listed below with the programme, usually a guest speaker or slide show.
|January 24||ZOOM meeting at 7pm. Jean Allen-Ikeson will be speaking to us about Cattlianthe Chocolate Drop and its hybrids. Chocolate Drop - it’s not a hybrid with a lot of wow factor but has produced more hybrids with great colours. You will be seeing RED in such hybrids as Cherry Suisse, Tutankamen, Orglade's Cheer and Roman Holiday.
Jean Allen-Ikeson is a judge in the Toronto Judging Centre, was newsletter editor for more than five years for OSRBG, has written numerous articles for Orchids magazine and webinars for the AOS besides being National Education Coordinator for AOS Judges and Chair of the Editorial Board of the AOS. Jean grows in a greenhouse and sunroom 'up the escarpment' from Dundas.
|February 20||Join OSRBG for a ZOOM meeting on Sunday, Feb 20th at 2:00 p.m. We will hear Pepe Portilla (the president / owner of Ecuagenera) give a presentation of "Orchids in situ ex situ".|
|March 28||ZOOM meeting when Drew Goddard will speak about his hybridizing program with a focus on Phalaenopsis orchids.|
|April 25||First in-person meeting in a long time. Terry Kennedy speaking on Orchid Facts and Figures. She will tell us fun facts about orchids and different ways of looking at them to see figures in them. Doug and Terry will bring plants for sale.|
|May 23||Dan Doucette talks about Orchids of the New World (Costa Rica and Suriname)|
|June 27||Eric Lee from Crystal Star Orchids will speak on potting media. He will have many fabulous orchids for sale as well. Pre-ordering is available. Please select the plants you would like from www.crystalstarnursery.com and choose "pick up" as the shipping option. Eric will bring your plants to the meeting in June. Check out his website for orchids, aroids, Hoyas and potting supplies!|
|September 12||Preparation for our sale. Gerhard Kompter will be talking about growing at windowsills and Sowmya will be talking about growing under lights. These will be short, informal talks as our focus will be the Sale.|
|October 24||Greg Warner from A Bloomin' Addiction will be doing a talk on Cypripediums and their culture. He will also answer any questions about Phrags and multifloral Paphs.|
|November 28||Our Christmas party, games (to join bring small, wrapped gift to $10) and pot luck dinner.
Please bring your own dishes, cutlery and glassware. A punch, coffee and tea will be provided. You are welcome to bring wine if you wish. Doors Open at 6:30 p.m. Eat at 7 p.m.
